Artist’s profile

Tony
Oursler

New York, USA, 1957

Tony Oursler was born in New York in 1957, and attended the California Institute of Arts, completing his studies there in 1979.

A visionary pioneer in the video art of the early 1980s in New York, he developed a continually evolving multimedia and audiovisual practice, creating visual stories with alienating and surreal notes.

Combining projections, sculptures, optical devices and audio recordings, his film material interacts with the space: videos projected often onto spherical surfaces, faces, automata in the act of speaking, eyeballs, puppets – create immersive and dreamlike environments. Tony Oursler has exhibited in such places as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Portikus in Frankfurt, the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Bordeaux, the Kunstverein in Hannover, the Hirshorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington DC, the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA,

as well as having participated in the Documenta 8, 9, 10 in Kassel.
